Cardinal Heating just acquired a new HVAC toy; the Nest Thermostat and we love it!

It doesn’t matter if you have a dozen kids (or four, in my case) or if it’s just you and the dog – multiple people in a home means multiple schedules and multiple needs. And yes, in my house, dogs count as people.

The Nest Learning Thermostat helps you manage different demands on your home, but there are a few things to keep in mind:

The Gladiators: You’re comfortable at 68°. She prefers 70°. The battle begins. Nest is great, but it can’t referee. So if your family changes the temperature several times during a short period, Nest will only remember the last adjustment. Of course if your opponent weakens and doesn’t change your temp fast enough – within an hour, for example – then Nest may remember both your adjustments.

The Constant Adjuster: If your four-year-old likes the way Nest looks when she turns it to 80° or your brother visiting from Maine prefers it a balmy 63°, you can lock the range of temperatures your thermostat can reach. Just go to SETTINGS and LOCK. Anyone approaching your thermostat will need to enter a four-digit code to turn Nest up higher or lower than the range you’ve set, and you’ll still have full control from the Web and Mobile app.

The Night Owl: Auto-Away won’t turn on at night, so if your kid is up late “studying” and turns on the heat, Nest may show him a message that says “72 for the night.” That means it’ll stay that warm until your next scheduled temp adjustment, probably in the morning. Nobody wants to sweat through their sheets, so remind your family to turn down the temp after a late night.

The Visitor: Your grandma comes home from Florida for the week. She’s home all day, gets up at 5AM and likes it at 70° all the time. She lives like a queen, but it’s seriously messing up Nest’s schedule. To avoid teaching Nest bad habits, pause Auto-Schedule for the week. Nest will stick to the schedule you’ve set, no matter how many times your kid turns up the heat at noon for breakfast. Just go to SETTINGS, LEARNING and SCHEDULE.

The Pet Lover: Don’t worry: Auto-Away won’t freeze Fido. Auto-Away turns Nest down automatically if it doesn’t sense any activity for a couple hours, but looks above most pet’s heads. Away temps can be set as low as 40° and as high as 85°, but you select those temperatures during setup and can make them as low or high as you like. Choose to heat to 64° or cool to 80° – it’ll save energy for you while keeping your pets comfortable. Want to adjust your Away temps? Go to SETTINGS, LEARNING and AUTO-AWAY on your Nest.

I Forgot to Set the Nest: No problem! Nest has the ability to be controlled by your smart phone, iPad or pc from anywhere in the world where you can connect to the Internet.  You will never have to worry about leaving the heat on or coming back to your nest cold again.

Hopefully these tips will keep everyone in the family comfortable. But what do you think? Did we miss any Nest features that help you manage your busy home?

The installation manual says that an average handy homeowner can install a Nest. But not everyone can or wants to install Nest themselves, so that’s why Cardinal offers our professional installation service. Just call for an appointment at (425) 827-9997.

Check out the NEST website and watch the brief video.

We’re part of our community and proud of it!

Cardinal Heating has sponsored Little League in Duvall for the past 11 years. We are committed to our community and give back when we can. We have sponsored our employees’ bowling leagues, girls’ basketball in Bellevue, PTSA auctions and Boy Scouts of America.

I am one of the owners for Cardinal and I have coached youth soccer and baseball in Duvall for the past 11 years. My partner, Mike has volunteered his time coaching youth baseball in Bellevue and has been active with Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and PTSA (Parent Teacher Student Associations.)

We encourage our staff and employees to take time to volunteer and have a very liberal policy for time off when volunteering to help others. Some employees are in the military reserves, they are active in church, community events and many local charities. Our Project Manager Steve Murray has participated in Habitat for Humanity for 5 years.

We hope that you value our commitment to our community at large and are active yourself. It feels good to help others and to be an integral partner with the communities in which we live and work. What are you doing to help others? We’d love to hear about it! Let us know if you have a project that we could partner in.

To the good health of our region and those living in it ~ Cheers to the Northwest!

Now that we are finally getting some warmer weather you may have noticed that your A/C is not working like it should. Before you call us for a service call there are a few things that you can check yourself and possibly save some money.

  1. Check to make sure that your thermostat is set in the "cool" position.
  2. Ensure that your outdoor air conditioning (condensing unit) is running:
    • Check the circuit breakers in the circuit breaker box (or electrical panel), most likely mounted to an outside wall in the back of the house.
    • Are they in the "On" position? Check the outdoor unit "disconnect switch" to make sure it is in the "ON" position.
    • The disconnect switch is located near the outdoor unit. (Typically a grey 8" wide x 16" high x 4" deep box mounted to the wall).
  3. Ensure that the blower motor in your furnace is running. (If the thermostat is in the "cool" position, the furnace blower should be running.) If not, check to make sure the on / off switch at the furnace is in the "ON" position
  4. Be sure that you have changed your filter in the furnace recently. An extremely blocked filter can cause your outdoor air conditioner unit to shut down due to lack of proper airflow. A standard filter should be changed every month. Check all return air grilles to make sure they are not blocked by furniture. (The return air grilles are normally located on your walls and are wide and flat).
  5. Check all supply air registers to make sure they are open and blowing air.

If your system is still not cooling further diagnosis and repair should be performed by a licensed service technician. Contact us today if you would like to schedule an appointment or “Ask an expert” for more help.

Carrier Breaks the Heat Pump Efficiency Ceiling with Variable Speed Technology

Carrier® Greenspeed™ Intelligence Enables Units to Deliver Highest Heating Efficiency Rating of Any Air Source Heat Pump on the Market

The new inverter heat pump delivers an HSPF heating efficiency rating up to 13, the highest of any air source heat pump on the market, and cooling efficiencies of up to 20 SEER. The innovation behind this advanced heat pump is known as Carrier® Greenspeed™ intelligence and will be available as part of the Infinity® heat pump line.

These units will not be available to the general public until this fall but because of our relationship with Carrier, Cardinal Heating and A/C has been selected to have access to the first units that arrive in the Seattle area this summer. There is already a lot of interest in these units because of the positive impact they will have on energy bills and the environment. We will be posting more information as it becomes available so check back often or feel free to contact us to get on the waiting list for these units.
